Discernment Weekend - Spring 2019

VocWknd 1

15 candidates "from different part of the US soil" had a "fabulous weekend" of discernment with the likes of our Capuchin brothers Raf Anguiano, Vocation Director, Tom Betz, our Provincial Minister, friar students Alex Hostoffer, Mike Herlihy, Edgar Pereira, Tage Danielson and Lester Knoll, from our Capuchin Formation Program in Wickliffe, OH. Postulants Tony Rivera and Matt Lontz were there as well.

Br. Diogo's a Deacon

This month witnessed ordinations of Capuchin friars from all of our jurisdictions in the US, Puerto Rico and Papua New Guine. Our brother Diogo Escudero, OFM Cap., (pictured above, fourth from the right) was ordained a deacon in Washington, DC, on Saturday, January 5th. At the celebrative dinner after the Ordination, Diogo thanks his family, friends and friars for their support:

Students at Borromeo Battle the Clergy . . .

Mick Joyce, OFM Cap., our Vicar Provincial and Staff member of Borromeo Seminary in Wicklife, OH, shared photos of a stirring basketball match in an honored venue: the LeBron James Arena at St. Vincent - St. Mary High School in Akron, OH. The matchup pitted two rivals, priests vs. students of Borromeo, in a thrilling competition held on Sunday, January 27. Mick wrote: "What a privilege it is to serve in the Diocese of Cleveland and work with these young men as they discern priesthood and religious life. God be praised! " The students came away with the win; the only score we could discern was the 37-47 display on the scoreboard, the students being the "guest" team. We're told that the competition ties the rivalry at one game a piece!

Borromeo is the home of our College-level Formation Program (the Capuchin Formation Program - CFP) for those who, while in college studies, want to discern God's call with others who are discerning Capuchin life in community while earning their degree.

WYD 2019: In Panamá & DC!

World Youth Day 2019:
Panamá

Our Capuchin brothers Raf Anguiano (Vocation Director), Juan Antonio Ortiz and Tage Danielson traveled to Panamá City for the celebration of World Youth Day 2019. They were there from January 21-29 and with them were 7 candidates from different parts of the USA. They got a chance to meet up with our brother Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., for breakfast on one of those days.

WYD2019 Panama3During each day of the event, the friars had a period of catechesis with the English speakers, followed by Mass. They also had the opportunity to visit some "beautiful places from Panamá." The evening showcased concerts until midnight. Finally, on Saturday evening, the group kept vigil in a Eucaristic Adoration with Pope Francis. At that vigil, they "met and danced with people from France, Mexico and Germany." Raf wrote that "it was truly an amazing experience."

The theme for this WYD was “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38). The original statue of Our Lady of Fatima made the trip from Portugal for the event: the Holy Father announced at the closing Mass that the next WYD (in 2022) will be hosted there.
