Epiphany 2015

You took great pains, my Lord,
to show yourself revealed as Christ,
aside from stories floating free
of angels, star and Magi,
you raised some eyebrows
with public baptism and Cana’s wine,
repeated healings astounding everyone,
and then you seemed to erase it all
on Golgotha.

From there your credentials lay for me
in Peter’s change,
and Magdalene,
the cringing Peter
now preached and healed in open space,
and acted fearlessly for all the world
as copy of his master,
while Magdalene kept prayerful vigil,
alert with love,
and first could hear his risen voice,
to pass on his resurrection message.

Then Thomas helped
my groping way,
with bluster demanding probing touch,
reporting a finger lost
by near an inch within his hand,
while his palm slid in
within his side
to close to swallowing,
as Thomas repeatedly testified,
with bluster turned invisible
and only meekness in his mien,
while joy and recognition
acclaimed my heart and mind.
