Second Sunday of Advent
After Adam and Eve
resisted their Maker,
they did not pray repentance,
but remembered the God
of ample stores
and asked for newer blessings.
For fearful Cain
a mark declared
he had the Lord’s protection,
as he uncovered the ores
for fashioning tools
and the handiwork
that later built the Temple.
For Noah, watching for
the olive leaf,
re-docking his ark,
rejoiced in the land
just newly fertilized,
with growth so lush,
he drew a vintage of double potency,
his blessing making him totter.
The Judges and the Prophets preached
a murkier image of God,
as though his brighter blessing side
was overshadowed
by punishment and fear.
These noble descendants
of Adam and Eve
negated themselves
in repenting of evil and sin,
forgetting the blessings,
the goodness of their Maker.
