Ash Wednesday 2015

With epiphany designed
by the programming of stars,
the Magi trekked
from distant eastern stations
to lowly lands
of ancient prophets’ lore,
extending homage,
while gaining the blessing
of stars eternally bright.

These ashes adorning your brow
for Lenten ceremony,
persist as remnant
of epiphany’s strange star,
no longer designating
his dwelling place,
but the dignity and joyousness
of casting lot with him.
An escutcheon of ashes
proposes a new campaign
to enter deeper into knowing,
accepting and loving God’s revelation,
as he programmed
a star to lead to him
and stardust to learn of him.

As pulverized stardust
the Lenten ashes invite their bearers
to love the dignity
of their solar origin,
delighting like planets
within his orbit spinning,
constructed from the building blocks
of stars,
and elements eternal.
The epiphany ashes
make Lent a time of searching,
refurbishing and building
with appealing and lasting qualities
from star blocks,
not straw
and things too easily burned.
